Accessibility removes barriers from buying

Accessibility and conversion optimisation share a practical goal: helping more people understand the store and complete what they came to do. When navigation, content or controls exclude customers, the business loses trust and revenue as well as failing an important responsibility.

Accessible ecommerce is not limited to screen-reader users. Clear contrast, readable type, visible focus, useful labels and predictable interactions help customers with temporary injuries, changing vision, situational constraints and different ways of processing information.

Many accessibility issues appear as ordinary conversion friction. A vague error message, an unlabelled field or a control that cannot be reached by keyboard creates uncertainty at a critical moment. Fixing it makes the journey calmer for everyone.

Treat accessibility as a quality standard throughout design and development, not as a final compliance exercise. Retrofitting a mature store is slower and more expensive than building good patterns into the system.

Start with the core customer journeys

Review the routes that matter most: navigation, search, collection filtering, product selection, basket, checkout and account access. Test these journeys with keyboard only, at high zoom and using a screen reader where possible.

Pay attention to focus order and focus visibility. Customers should always know where they are and move through controls in a logical sequence. Modals, menus and filters must return focus sensibly when they close.

Forms need persistent labels, clear requirements and errors that explain how to recover. Colour alone should not communicate success or failure. Customers should not have to submit the same information repeatedly because an error erased their progress.

Product configuration deserves special care. Size, colour, subscription and bundle choices must expose their selected state programmatically and visually. An interaction that looks obvious may still be silent or confusing to assistive technology.

Make product content perceivable and useful

Alternative text should communicate the purpose of an image in context. Product photography may need to describe important visual details, while decorative imagery can be ignored. Repeating filenames or generic phrases adds noise rather than information.

Video should include accurate captions, and meaningful audio content may need transcripts. Avoid autoplaying sound and give customers control over movement. Campaign creativity should not make content difficult to pause, read or understand.

Use headings in a logical hierarchy so customers can scan the page and navigate by structure. Visual size alone does not create semantic meaning. Clear headings also improve content governance and search understanding.

Write link and button labels that make sense out of context. Repeated calls to “learn more” or icon-only controls create uncertainty. Specific labels help assistive-technology users and make interfaces easier for everyone to scan.

Design robust patterns, not isolated fixes

Fix shared components first. Improving the product card, navigation, form field or modal pattern can remove the same barrier across hundreds of pages. This is where accessibility and design systems reinforce each other.

Define accessible states for hover, focus, error, loading, unavailable and selected conditions. Teams often design the default state carefully and leave the moments where customers need the most feedback to browser defaults or third-party apps.

Review third-party tools before adoption. Reviews, chat, subscriptions, search and personalisation apps become part of the customer journey, even when their code is outside the theme. Procurement should include accessibility expectations and a plan for reporting problems.

Include automated checks in development, but do not treat a clean automated report as proof. Tools find valuable technical issues, while human testing reveals whether the experience is understandable and usable.

Make accessibility part of continuous optimisation

Create a prioritised backlog based on severity, frequency and journey importance. A keyboard trap in checkout deserves faster attention than a minor issue on a low-traffic editorial page, although both should still be resolved.

Measure completion, errors and support feedback alongside audit findings. Accessibility improvements may reduce form abandonment, increase successful searches or lower customer-service contacts. These outcomes help teams see accessibility as product quality rather than overhead.

Test new releases and major app changes against a small set of accessibility acceptance criteria. Regular checks prevent the store from gradually reintroducing barriers as campaigns and features accumulate.

Customers should not need to overcome the interface before deciding whether to buy. Accessible ecommerce creates a broader, clearer and more resilient experience, which is exactly what good conversion optimisation is meant to achieve.
